One Saturday after football [soccer] practice (back in September), Mommy took us to a fire prevention event at our neighborhood fire station.
We got to explore the fire station, sit in the driver's seats of all the emergency vehicles (fire engine, ambulance, and boat), try on equipment and watch rescuers tear apart a car using the jaws of life (just like Fireman Sam). It was SO cool!
They also had a trailer set up to simulate a house fire evacuation - complete with fake smoke. Prior to the 'evacuation', inside the trailer with other children and parents, we sat and listened to the Fire Marshall discuss fire hazards in the home. When he started asking a few questions, Liam, our resident evacuation expert, http://liamandlucy.blogspot.com/2011/08/fireman-liam.html was on fire (figuratively of course):
Fire Marshall: Does anyone know what to do if they're in a room with the door closed when a smoke detector goes off?
Liam (with raised hand): You touch the door with the back of your hand to feel if it's hot
Fire Marshall: Does anyone know what to do if they're in a room with the door closed when a smoke detector goes off?
Liam (with raised hand): You touch the door with the back of your hand to feel if it's hot
Fire Marshall: Very good! Why do you use the back of your hand?
Liam (with raised hand): Because you don't want to burn the inside of your hand. You're going to need to use it to get out.
Fire Marshall: Excellent. Does anyone know what to do if the door is hot?
Liam (with raised hand): You wait by the window for Mommy or a firefighter to get you out.
Fire Marshall: That's right. Does anyone know what to do if the door isn't hot?
Lucy: Ask my brother Liam, he knows. [by this point none of the 8 or 9-year-olds in the room want to go up against Liam]
Liam (with raised hand): You crawl low to the ground so you don't breathe smoke into your lungs.
Fire Marshall: [impressed] And where do you crawl to?
Liam (with raised hand): Out of the house to your safety spot.
Fire Marshall: You're hired! So, are you going to be a firefighter when you grow up?
Liam: No, I'm going to be an astronaut.
Mommy, proudly beaming, waited outside for us to complete our practice evacuation. It was an afternoon well-spent.
Fire Marshall: That's right. Does anyone know what to do if the door isn't hot?
